Our Story
Harmonia Academy's journey began in 1985, fueled by the vision of Maestro Erich Schmidt and his wife, Clara Schmidt, a renowned opera singer. Disillusioned with the rigid and often impersonal approach to music education prevalent at the time, they dreamt of creating an academy that fostered not only technical mastery but also a deep love and appreciation for music. They envisioned a place where students could explore their unique musical identities, collaborate with fellow artists, and receive personalized guidance from world-class instructors.
The Schmidts acquired a historic building on Johannesgasse, just a stone's throw from the iconic Vienna State Opera. This building, with its high ceilings, ornate moldings, and inherent acoustics, became the perfect home for Harmonia Academy. In the early years, the academy focused primarily on classical performance, offering courses in piano, strings, and vocal training. However, as the academy grew, so did its curriculum, expanding to include jazz improvisation, contemporary composition, and music theory.
Over the decades, Harmonia Academy has established itself as a leading institution for music education in Vienna and beyond. Our alumni have gone on to achieve international recognition as soloists, orchestral musicians, composers, and educators. We remain committed to the founding principles of Maestro and Clara Schmidt, providing a nurturing and inspiring environment where aspiring musicians can unlock their full potential. Today, under the guidance of the Schmidt family's legacy and a dedicated team of faculty and staff, Harmonia Academy continues to evolve, embracing innovation while staying true to its core values.
